On May 31, the Alliance for a Just Society joined with the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), Make the Road New York, and other immigrant justice organizations around the country to call on the federal government to adopt a strong, inclusive family unity waiver.
With the family unity waiver, immigrants would be able to process key portions of their permanent residence applications here in the U.S. Currently, many have to leave the country for months or even years just to process their applications, resulting in devastating separation from their children and spouses.
This issue is about more than arcane immigration rules – it’s about real families. To illustrate this reality, the Alliance and FIRM coauthored and released Promises to Keep: The Importance of an Inclusive Family Unity Waiver, which shares the stories of families caught in the terrible bind wrought by our immigration system.
